New Zealand’s Limestone Vineyards, From North Canterbury to Waitaki

Following limestone through New Zealand’s vineyards offers a rewarding way to explore Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It brings North Canterbury and the Waitaki Valley into the same conversation, while leaving room for the considerable differences between their landscapes and wines. Bell Hill, Pyramid Valley’s Waikari estate and Clos Ostler provide three places from which to begin that exploration.

Bell Hill and Pyramid Valley in North Canterbury

Bell Hill was established by Marcel Giesen and Sherwyn Veldhuizen at an old lime quarry in the Weka Pass. Its limestone-derived soils and hillside exposures are central to the estate’s account of its vineyard. Nearby in the wider Waikari landscape, Pyramid Valley’s original estate was planted by Mike and Claudia Weersing on a site with limestone, clay and marl. Both stories begin with close attention to the ground and the choice of a place for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

These are useful connections for anyone discovering New Zealand fine wine. They encourage a closer look at individual vineyards, beyond the broad regional names on a map. Pyramid Valley also works in Central Otago, so the limestone connection here refers specifically to its Waikari estate.

Clos Ostler’s limestone slope in the Waitaki Valley

Further south, Clos Ostler occupies a north-facing limestone escarpment overlooking the braided Waitaki River in North Otago. The family-owned, eight-hectare monopole brings Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris together in a long, cool growing season. Fossils in the limestone make the marine history of the site unusually tangible; above ground, the exposure, wind and course of each season shape the work among the vines.

For us, the interest lies in how each vineyard brings its soil and climate together. The exposure of a slope, the pace of ripening and the decisions made through the season all contribute to the finished wine. Limestone gives these sites a connection, while their individual conditions make each worth following in its own right.

Exploring fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay through place

At Clos Ostler, Caroline’s Pinot Noir brings together five clones from across the vineyard, while EOS follows a more focused selection. Waitaki Pinot Noir is an occasional release, and Waitaki Chardonnay offers another perspective on the same estate. Tasting across these wines, and returning to them in different vintages, is a way to understand the vineyard in greater depth.

For collectors exploring New Zealand’s limestone vineyards, Bell Hill, Pyramid Valley’s Waikari wines and Clos Ostler make a thoughtful starting point. Each deserves to be understood on its own terms. Their shared geological interest gives the conversation a beginning; the detail comes through the wines themselves.
