Reading Wine Awards, The Wine, the Vintage and the Year

A wine award is most useful when its details remain attached. The name on the bottle, the vintage, the competition and the year of judging tell you what was assessed. Those details can disappear when a medal becomes a small symbol beside a price, yet they are exactly what a curious buyer needs.

Two results, read precisely

Caroline’s Pinot Noir 2021 received 96 points and the New Zealand Red Trophy, New Zealand Pinot Noir Trophy and North Otago Pinot Noir Trophy at the International Wine Challenge in 2025. EOS Pinot Noir 2022 received Platinum and 97 points at the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards. These are separate wines, vintages and judging occasions.

The competition years differ from the vintages because the wines were assessed after harvest and maturation. A 2021 wine judged in 2025 is still the 2021 vintage. When comparing a retailer’s listing with a competition result, check that both refer to the same bottle rather than assuming the recognition carries across a producer’s whole range.

Use the note as well as the number

A score can bring a wine to your attention, but the accompanying description may be more useful when choosing for your own palate. Look for references to fruit, savoury detail, freshness, texture and finish. Ask whether those qualities fit the occasion and the wines you already enjoy.

Tasting dates also add perspective. A review of a young wine records one stage of its development. If you are opening the same vintage several years later, it helps to read subsequent notes and to consider the condition of your bottle. The original score remains part of the wine’s record; the wine itself continues to change.

Put recognition into a longer history

For Clos Ostler, the Caroline’s and EOS results offer two clear introductions to the estate. They sit beside the longer record of Caroline’s vintages, the history of the limestone vineyard and the differences between our selections. Following these threads gives a fuller understanding than collecting scores alone.

When a description calls a wine the best, look for the category and year behind the wording. A named trophy is specific and verifiable. That precision respects the judging and gives readers a sound reason to explore the bottle for themselves.
