The Waitaki Vineyard Through the Seasons

2 min read

The best time to visit a vineyard depends on what you hope to see. A green canopy, the activity around harvest and the bare shape of a winter slope offer different encounters with the same place. At Clos Ostler, the Waitaki’s changing seasons are part of the interest of staying above the vines.

Spring and summer

Spring brings the beginning of a new cycle. The vineyard gradually changes as growth develops, and the work of the season becomes visible. It is also a reminder that wine starts long before there is ripe fruit to taste. Weather can alter the pace, so a calendar provides only a broad guide to what you will find.

In summer, the canopy gives the vineyard another appearance. A stay can be planned around time in the valley and an evening with the wines. Leave room for conditions on the day, and check any local activities in advance. The landscape is an invitation to explore at a comfortable pace.

Autumn and harvest

Autumn draws attention towards the fruit and the decisions that determine picking. Harvest dates vary by year, variety and parcel, and a visit should never depend on an assumed date. A working vineyard may be especially busy at this time, so ask about access and hosted experiences before arranging your trip.

A stay above the vines brings the season into view. The growth of the canopy, the colour of the leaves and the work moving through the rows give a present-day setting to bottles made in earlier years. The vintage archive extends that view across the estate’s history.

Winter’s different perspective

With less foliage, the form of the vineyard is easier to see. Rows, contours and the relationship between the planting and the surrounding country become more apparent. For travellers who enjoy a quieter landscape, that view can be as rewarding as the colour of a growing season.

Check accommodation availability, travel conditions and the opening hours of places you hope to visit. Arrange tastings or other hosted experiences separately, and avoid assuming they are included with a stay. A little preparation gives the visit a clearer shape.

Whichever season you choose, return to a bottle afterwards. The memory of the vineyard in one particular stage becomes part of your understanding of the wine. A second visit in a different season may reveal how much of the place you had yet to see.
