Fine New Zealand Chardonnay Beyond the Oak

The detail that holds our attention in the 2025 Chardonnay is its white-floral lift. There is depth beneath it, and the texture expected from barrel fermentation, yet the fragrance remains clear. White nectarine and fresh fruit carry through a wine that feels generous without becoming heavy.

For us, the appeal of fine New Zealand Chardonnay lies in this ability to hold richness and delicacy together. The 2025 has the substance of a barrel-fermented wine, yet white nectarine and flowers remain at the centre of its identity. Its interest is not exhausted by the first impression of oak. The fruit has enough definition to remain distinct within the texture.

The cellar choices behind the texture

The 2025 was fermented and matured entirely in barrel, with approximately 35 per cent new oak. Around half underwent malolactic fermentation. Those proportions describe the decisions made for this season; they are useful context for the depth and freshness we find in the finished wine.

Thirty-five per cent new oak describes a part of the cellar work, not the proportion of oak a drinker will taste. Fruit concentration, the character of the barrels and the course of maturation all affect its presence in the finished wine. In the 2025, the white-fruit fragrance gives the palate a clear centre. The texture surrounds that fruit without becoming the only thing to remember.

A different expression of the season

The 2024 and 2025 provide an absorbing comparison. The 2024 completed malolactic fermentation; the 2025 followed a partial approach. In our tasting, the newer wine’s floral and white-fruit character gives it a particularly alluring lift.

The two wines come from the same limestone slope, but neither has to imitate the other to express it convincingly. The 2024 carries white peach and citrus through a fuller malolactic approach. The 2025 gives white flowers and nectarine particular prominence. Their individuality is part of the attraction of following a small estate, where the seasonal differences remain visible.

Recognition and the longer view

Candice Chow awarded Clos Ostler Chardonnay 2025 96 points. Her review emphasises tension, elegance, a creamy texture and a sustained finish, alongside nectarine, lime, blossom and almond detail. The combination is significant for our Chardonnay, recognising both the wine’s generosity and the definition that carries it.

Chardonnay now gives another expression to a vineyard long associated with Pinot Noir. Its white-fruit perfume and texture belong to the same North Otago setting without needing to resemble the reds. Our ambition is for it to command attention in its own right among New Zealand’s fine white wines. The 2025 provides a specific foundation for that ambition, a wine whose fragrance remains vivid through its depth.
