The Growing Reputation of the Waitaki Valley

The Waitaki Valley occupies a small place on New Zealand’s wine map. For many people, an introduction still comes through a single bottle, a restaurant recommendation or a review. The vineyard’s beginnings and the wines it has produced over time give that first encounter a much richer history.
An early vineyard
The origins of Clos Ostler lie in a search begun by Jim Jerram and Jeff Sinnott in 1998. They were drawn to a north-facing limestone slope overlooking the braided Waitaki River. The first Pinot Noir vines at the site were planted in 2002, during the early development of the valley’s modern wine industry.
That history gives the estate a place in the region’s development. It also gives us an increasing span of vintages to examine. Each year adds another record of the same site, with its own weather, growing conditions and decisions in the vineyard and cellar.
Recognition beyond the valley
EOS Pinot Noir 2022 received 97 points and Platinum at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2026. Decanter’s results report identified it as the Waitaki Valley’s first Platinum. That distinction gives a small New Zealand wine region a place in an international conversation, through a specific wine grown on our North Otago limestone slope.
The preceding year, Caroline’s Pinot Noir 2021 won the New Zealand Red Trophy, New Zealand Pinot Noir Trophy and North Otago Pinot Noir Trophy at the International Wine Challenge 2025. The New Zealand Red Trophy is a particularly important recognition of that vintage. Alongside EOS 2022’s Decanter result, it brings two different estate selections to the attention of readers discovering Waitaki Pinot Noir.
Chardonnay adds another dimension. Candice Chow awarded Clos Ostler Chardonnay 2025 96 points, describing tension and elegance within its creamy texture. The recognition supports our conviction that the vineyard deserves attention for white wine as well as Pinot Noir. Its white-fruit perfume and fine texture offer a different expression of the site.
Reading beyond one result
A vintage archive allows that interest to become more informed. The date of a review matters, as does the age of the wine when it was tasted. A young wine’s promise and a mature bottle’s development are different observations, both worth recording precisely.
Caroline’s provides the longest view of our Pinot Noir vineyard. Looking across its vintages gives readers a way to consider the recurring character of the site alongside the particular qualities of a season. Independent reviews add other perspectives to our own notes.
The vineyard’s planting in 2002 has now led to a substantial bottle history. Our recent account of Caroline’s from 2009 onwards follows black-truffle and autumn-leaf character in older bottles through to fresher herbs in younger vintages. These are estate observations gathered over time, adding another dimension to the dated independent reviews. Together they make the regional story richer than a succession of awards alone.
A region encountered bottle by bottle
At Winetopia and other tastings, visitors have returned to our stand to tell us that the wines were among the finest they had tasted. Those personal encounters have their own importance. A distant region becomes memorable through the perfume of a glass, the texture of a wine and the conversation it starts. For a small estate, that response gives the work a deeply human reward.
For us, the Waitaki deserves far greater attention among New Zealand’s fine-wine regions. The combination of an exacting climate, distinctive limestone sites and wines of savoury depth and bright acidity gives it an importance that extends beyond its small scale. Its promise is exciting precisely because the farming is demanding and the results can be so individual.
