Clos Ostler, a Hidden Gem of New Zealand Wine

Tucked away near Duntroon in the Waitaki Valley, North Otago, Clos Ostler is a small family estate enclosed by limestone walls. Within the clos, vines follow one north-facing slope above the valley. The stone enclosure, the intimacy of the vineyard and the focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay recall a small Burgundian domaine, in a landscape unmistakably of New Zealand.

Across the valley, the braided Waitaki River makes its way towards the Pacific. Around the vineyard, fossil-bearing limestone holds traces of an ancient sea. Scallop shells remain embedded in the stones of the enclosing wall, a visible connection between the land beneath the vines and the wider landscape.

A true clos in the Waitaki Valley

In the French vineyard tradition, a clos is a vineyard enclosed by walls. At Clos Ostler, the name describes the vineyard itself. Limestone walls mark its boundary, their pale stone carrying fossil shells from the ancient seabed beneath the estate.

The clos is also a monopole, with the eight-hectare vineyard held under one family ownership. The two terms express different aspects of the same estate. The clos gives the vineyard its physical enclosure. The monopole allows the whole site to be farmed with a shared approach and a long-term commitment to its future.

For wine lovers drawn to Burgundy, that idea has a particular appeal. One slope can become a lifelong subject of interest. Different plantings reveal different aspects of it, while successive vintages record the seasons. Opening another bottle becomes a way of getting to know the vineyard more closely.

At Clos Ostler, Pinot Noir is the principal variety, accompanied by smaller plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. All are grown within the estate. The vineyard is dry-grown, its fruit harvested by hand, with decisions made parcel by parcel as the season unfolds.

A Burgundian sensibility in the Waitaki

The resemblance to a small Burgundian estate lies in this concentration of attention. Limestone, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay provide familiar reference points. Family ownership and the continuity of working one vineyard deepen the connection.

The Waitaki supplies its own conditions. Westerly weather from the mountains and easterly influences from the Pacific meet along the valley. The northern exposure brings sunlight to the slope within a cool, windy setting. Each harvest reflects how those forces have played out through the year.

For Clos Ostler, the ambition is to make that origin recognisable in the glass. The estate’s approach is guided by minimal intervention and respect for the individuality of each vintage.

Wines that reward discovery

International recognition has brought this quiet corner of North Otago to a wider audience. Caroline’s Pinot Noir 2021 received 96 points at the 2025 International Wine Challenge, winning the New Zealand Red, New Zealand Pinot Noir and North Otago Pinot Noir trophies.

EOS Pinot Noir 2022 followed with Platinum and 97 points at the 2026 Decanter World Wine Awards. Its dried raspberry, rose petal and lemon thyme notes offer an inviting introduction to the estate, with fresh acidity carrying the wine towards a long, savoury finish.

Chardonnay provides another reason to look closely. Its first vintage was 2024, opening a new chapter in the vineyard’s story. The 2025 received 96 points from Candice Chow, whose review highlighted its tension, creamy texture and sustained finish. It gives lovers of fine white wine a distinct route into Clos Ostler and another expression of the same limestone slope.

There is a particular pleasure in discovering an estate while its wider reputation is still taking shape. The wines provide a reason to pay attention. The vineyard gives that attention somewhere to return.

For those seeking a hidden gem among New Zealand wines, Clos Ostler offers something compelling. A small family estate, a stone-walled vineyard in the Waitaki, and the opportunity to follow one remarkable slope through the bottles it produces.
