Paroa Bay Winery

Set within a sheltered inlet of rolling hills and coastal creeks, Paroa Bay is an eight-block vineyard shaped by clay soils, marine influence, and Northland sunlight. We produce a range of expressive wines that reflect the singular character of the region, all grown, handpicked, made, and bottled on our estate. Our approach is deeply rooted in place, driven by a desire to craft honest wines, while supporting the land and community that sustain us.

Paroa Bay Winery spans eight vineyard blocks on our coastal estate, producing a range of wines that reflect the character and complexity of our unique Northland site. With a winemaking approach rooted in care for the land, each vintage is an honest expression of place, crafted with intention and bottled on the estate.

Our Region

Northland’s long sunshine hours and maritime influence create a warm, steady growing environment. Bright days, often exceeding 2,000 hours per year, paired with cooling coastal breezes define the coastal microclimate that, allows our fruit to ripen steadily, contributing intense flavour and balance to the wine.

Our Environment

Set within a sheltered inlet of the Bay of Islands, our vineyard is framed by rolling hills shaped millions of years ago through powerful tectonic shifts known as the Northland Allochthon. During this period, ancient seafloor sediments were pushed onto land, forming the foundations of the landscape we farm today.

Over time, marine layers, volcanic basalts, and limestone fragments weathered into fertile clay soils — now the defining feature of our vineyard. This richly textured terrain of steep ridges, sheltered valleys, and slopes overlooking the bay creates a challenging growing environment, rewarding us with expressive wines shaped by place.

Our Winery

At the heart of Paroa Bay estate is our winery, where our grapes are grown, handpicked, made, and bottled onsite. We take a minimalist approach to winemaking, allowing the complexity of the terroir and climate to shape each wine. Our role is to guide the process with a light touch, so that each bottle tells the story of the land, the season, and the hard work of our team. Every bottle is a testament to the vineyard’s resilience and the challenging yet rewarding conditions that shape its character.
